The SENAI Innovation Institute (ISI) originated from a demand of the Brazilian chemical industry. The industry (ABIQUIM) supported the idealization and structure of the Institute.
Demand for R&D&I, the existing technological gaps and the natural vocations for the development of the chemical industry in Brazil were assessed through workshops promoted by the Fraunhofer Institute with companies’ representatives and academia. Today, several of these chemical companies develop their R&D projects with the Institute.
These innovation opportunities were corroborated by studies such the National Industry Compact, published by ABIQUIM (2011) and the Diversification of the Brazilian Chemical Industry, developed by Bain & Co and GasEnergy, commissioned by BNDES (2014). Therefore, the ISI aims to add value to the pre-salt oil and to the Brazilian biomass as well as to use the biological information contained in the local biodiversity, needed for the industrial development in Brazil.
Today, with the support of the Brazilian Association of Nonwoven and Technical Fabrics (ABINT), the Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (ABIT), and the Brazilian Association of Artificial and Synthetic Fiber Producers (ABRAFAS), the Institute has created a specialized team in the area of fibers and textile finishing, focusing on the development of technical textiles and high performance fibers.
To develop sustainable solutions through chemistry and industrial biotechnology using renewable and non-renewable resources for the establishment of new products and processes.
To become a national and international reference in R,D&I for the development of new products and chemical processes from renewable and non-renewable resources and the development of biotechnology.
The ISI for Biosynthetic aims to become a self-sustaining private applied research institute. To do so, it offers its services through direct contacting by companies and supports funding opportunities identification that best suits the profile of each project. The research execution process follows project management rules applied to R,D&I, defining milestones and stage-gates.
For the Institute, it is important the effective participation of the client during the research development. The company’s researchers may work inside the Institute laboratories, as well as SENAI researchers are available to work inside companies’ laboratories if requested. Added to that, the ISI aims to act as an open lab for scholars.
Inaugurated in January 2016, the SENAI Innovation Institute for Biosynthetic is part of the Technology Center for the Chemical and Textile Industries of SENAI (SENAI CETIQT), where it combines synergistic actions with the other areas of technology and education.
The Institute has a Technical Advisory Committee which aims to foster closer relations and dialogue among the key stakeholders of the Brazilian innovation system. It also provides a discussion forum on market positioning and performance targeting aiming continuous growth and stabilization of the applied research and innovation business in Biosynthetic in Brazil.
Added to it, the Committee proposes to expand the possibilities of cooperation and integration among ISI, industry, government and academy.
